Why I Don’t Use Bookmarks, and So Can You

Version 3 of Firefox was released in June of 2008 and it wasn’t long after that I stopped bookmarking pages. It wasn’t Firefox 3 alone that that changed my behavior, but it was Firefox that enabled it. As I described in my article about RSS the other day, I once had a set of bookmarks for sites I visited constantly. Google Reader replaced those bookmarks, but I still kept a set of well organized bookmarks for sites that didn’t have RSS feeds or that I used for reference. What was it about Firefox 3 that made me stop using bookmarks?

Still Using Outlook Express in XP? There’s a Better Way

There’s more than one superior alternative to Outlook Express, actually, and the best part is, they’re completely free. It’s not hard to be better than Outlook Express, which is well known for a history of security flaws that can expose your computer to viruses, poor handling of multiple email accounts, awful IMAP support, and a complete lack of spam handling features. I have a pair of email programs for you to try that deal well with all of those things: Mozilla Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail.

Bats in My Belfry: Getting Rid of Virus Infected Files in Windows System Restore

If you have antivirus software running (and you should), you may find that it detects virus infected files in your Windows System Restore directories. These directories are well protected by Windows, so your AV program won’t be able to remove the infected files it finds in them. It turns out it’s easy to fix this.

RSS and the 21st Century Web

Before using RSS feeds, I had a collection of bookmarks for sites that I read regularly. I’d click on each one in turn to check if any new content had appeared since I last looked. If I was really bored, I might go through them a second time. This process was tedious and I often visited pages that were unchanged since my last visit. That all changed when I started using RSS.
